CS (Coil Stool), 2013- ongoing
Carbon fiber and resin
15 x 16½
Jonathan Muecke resists standard divisions between design, art, and architecture, instead focusing on refined forms that investigate notions of positive and negative space, positional relationships to structures, and the innate desire to read notions of functionality into objects that relate to human scale.
Muecke often works in limited editions of what he calls “Open Objects.” These works conform to traditional furniture forms while also retaining a sense of indeterminacy. The CS or Coiled Stool combines traditional basketmaking techniques, 19th-century explorations with composite tubes, and high-tech materials and processes.
Made from a single length of fiber tubing coiled in a wooden mold, also on view here, and fixed with epoxy resin, each stool is one piece with a continuous structure and surface.
